Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - Bachelor of Information Technology
Studying Engineering at JCU offers unique opportunities for you to gain expertise in the particular challenges and demands of engineering in the tropics. As JCU is located between two World Heritage areas – the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics rainforests – you have access to some of the world’s most spectacular natural tropical laboratories, which provide the impetus for much of the discipline’s research work.
Students have access to well-equipped, modern laboratories, highly qualified teaching staff and best-practice course content that is reviewed by an industry advisory board. The course incorporates design, project management, team work and effective communication skills.
You will gain valuable industry experience and contacts with 12 weeks of paid, industry-based placements throughout the course. The capstone to your study is the final year project, which gives you the opportunity to carry out a significant research or design task under the leadership of a supervising member of academic staff.
JCU’s Bachelor of Information Technology combines a solid basis of computing theory with practical knowledge and skills in software, software engineering, multimedia, databases and networking.
After completing first-year core subjects, you select a major from: Business Informatics; Computing and Networking; or Interactive Technologies and Games Design.
The course includes opportunities for hands-on experience with internships at local businesses and organisations. The learning environment is friendly and open, with ample small-group tutorials and hands-on practical sessions in the laboratories.
JCU has excellent computing facilities, with 24-hour labs in Cairns and Townsville.
